Adventure Racing is like a multi-day Easter egg hunt for the athletically masochistic. Teams must run, kayak, mountain bike, climb, and rappel their way from check point to check point, navigating through rough and remote wilderness areas with only a map and compass to guide them. The sport involves long hours (some races run longer than a week), no breaks, little sleep, impossible caloric intake, and a good deal of wishing you’d taken up a sensible pastime like golf or ping-pong. Unlike other endurance races, each segment of an Adventure Race must be completed as a team; all decisions, good or bad, are made as a team, and the group must cross the finish line together. UltraBambi has been racing since 2005. What began as a rag-tag team of confused neophytes who couldn’t navigate their way out of a cul-de-sac has evolved into a rag-tag team of confused veterans and novices who have somehow managed to land themselves on the podium in a number of competitive races. UltraBambi has competed all over the United States, from the canyons of Utah to the mountains of Virginia to the northernmost reaches of New Hampshire. We’re not above catching an hour of sleep on the floor of a McDonald’s (you’ve got to sleep somewhere in three-day race), but when it’s time to go, there’s nothing we love more than biking down muddy trails in the driving rain in the middle of the night. After all, we’re saving golf and ping-pong for retirement. Members of UltraBambi are proudly supported by the Dartmouth Outing Club and Dartmouth Ledyard Canoe Club. |
